Very disappointing performance from Toulouse last round (lost away at Sochaux 2-0).
Toulouse had huge problems in keeping possession in midfield and as a consequence there was constant pressure on defenders who couldn’t deal with such a situation.
Not only the defensive phase was very poor but the overall performance. Offensively they were unrecognizable and only had a few shy attempts on target. As a matter of fact the first shot on target came very late in the game. There were clear problems when trying to build actions and unfortunately they won’t be able to address the situation, especially with central midfielder Chantome out suspended. He plays an important role for the construction phase and his absence will heavily diminish the offensive potential.
Defender Yago will also miss through suspension.
Although Lyon lost the final of the French Cup against PSG (2-1) they made impressive efforts and managed to corner the Parisians a couple of times. The problem is they still lack creativity as both Gourcuff and Grenier are out injured.
They rely solely on Lacazette and Gomis for taking actions on their own and making the difference. But the problem is Gomis is out-of-form and Lacazette is actually the only one struggling to create decent opportunities.
In defense Lyon are capable of stopping actions created by talented and inventive opponents, so against Toulouse, who are in an offensive standstill, they shouldn’t have many problems.
Seeing both sides are deficient when it comes to creativity, real scoring opportunities will be a rarity. The battle will be played in midfield and it remains to be seen who will be the ones succeeding in pushing the game in opponents’ half.
UPDATE: Toulouse will be without keeper Ahamada and forward Ben Basat.
