Huge efforts are needed in order to concede 5 goals from one the weakest attacks in Ligue1. But somehow Sochaux managed to do just that (lost 5-1 at Toulouse).
New coach Renard inexplicably changed the system and played with a defense in 3. I don’t know who gave him his coaching license but most probably he must have bought it from a supermarket or something… Sochaux were already leaking goals from all positions possible and playing with just 3 defenders was suicidal.
Furthermore coach Renard took off winger Contout, one of Sochaux’s best players so far this season.
There are only two possible explanations for this kind of behavior: Renard was either ill intentioned or he’s clueless when it comes to tactics. I am no fan of conspiracy theories so I am going for the 2nd option, meaning Sochaux will continue with suicidal tactics.
Their most solid defender, Carlao suffered a knock last round and will miss this game.
The 4-0 loss at St Etienne was a bit harsh considering Reims defended pretty good for the entire 90 minutes. It was the set pieces that buried Reims (conceded 3 goals following set pieces).
The opponent was powerful and Reims had little chances to create any kind of danger. But now things will be different as Sochaux are exactly at the opposite end.
Reims have a powerful midfield with 3 central midfielders engaged in both the defensive and offensive phase. Wingers are very active throughout the entire 90 minutes and provide sole striker De Preville with many good balls.
Sometimes stats can be deceiving, although Reims haven’t scored in the last 3 rounds, with De Preville upfront they are better than about two months ago, when all their shots on target came from outside the box.
I am eager to see what Sochaux’s coach Renard will invent next or if he’ll switch back to the classic system. Either way there’s nothing he can do to improve the defense, especially with central defender Carlao being injured.
At 1.75 the price on Reims +0.5 is just great.
