Great performance achieved by Rennes last round away at PSG. Even more amazing when we think it was done in 9 men. It will be pretty hard for them to get the same satisfaction as they did last round against any other opponent in this league…
That can be a set back in terms of motivation and determination, but it remains to be seen. Offensive midfielders Pitroipa and Alessandrini are capable of great actions, both on the flanks and in the center. Only Feret (a while back their most important player at creation) is not finding himself. He always shoots blanks and his passes seem to be miles away.
The potential in the defensive midfield is purely amazing with M’Vila and Makoun. But now they are both out, Makoun suspended and M’Vila injured. That will severely diminish they resisting power. On top of that undisputed player for the goalkeeper position, Costil is also suspended. Now he is no Buffon or anything and his substitute N’Diaye made a nice first impression vs PSG (even if the post helped him a couple of times…) Still he lacks experience at this level and that may be a major set back.
The luck is definitely on Evian’s side. Although they have only a mediocre squad they somehow get results. Furthermore there were a couple of rounds in which they played without their main men: Khelifa and Barbosa. Now, according to latest reports, they should be available for the trip to Rennes. It will be a major boost, as Barbosa’s vision combined with Khelifa’s speed can give headaches to most defenses in Ligue 1 (especially to those without 2 defensive midfielders and first choice keeper…)
There are always bloopers in their defensive phase but one way or another, sometimes, the manage to outscore the opponent. Defender Mongnongu is still injured and forward Sagbo is suspended.
Contrary to public opinion this won’t be an easy game for Rennes. Far from it… If guests will succeed in be more rigorous when defending hosts will find themselves in real trouble. Rennes will try using many players at creation, but with Barbosa back, that will be exactly what Evian is after… The surprise of the round, Evian to get at least 1 point from Rennes.
