The game versus title holders Montpellier wasn’t the first time that young right back Palun made vital mistakes.
Relatively young (23 years old) and a bit inexperienced, the Gabonese fullback Lloyd Palun showed once again that a sole player can make a team lose points. His direct opponent was former teammate Mounier, helped by talented Utaka. It was too much for him to cope with these two. Missed simple ball stopping attempts and confused tackles seemed to be his specialty.
He came to Nice about two seasons ago, but was never used so much as this season. He was mainly a substitute and his services were solicited only when necessity imposed it. Maybe he is mentally unprepared for the responsibility of being a regular and this is what’s causing his childish mistakes, or maybe his skills were too overrated to begin with.
Palun has troubles not only when encountering proved skilled wingers (like Utaka was for example) but also a couple of rounds ago, against Bastia, he had a hard time coping with an out of form winger, Khazri.
One thing is for sure, if coach Puel won’t find any alternatives, the efforts of his teammates will be in vain. And it is a shame because Nice could have one of the best defenses in Ligue 1, with Pejcinovic and Civelli in center and Kolodziejczak on the left side.
