After 2 consecutive Ligue1 defeats Rennes bounced back in the midweek Cup game against Ligue2 side Creteil (won 1-0). Considering the difference in value and the fact they used all regulars (except central defender Mexer) Rennes were far from impressive.
Rennes is the team of the extremes. They had an amazing run of 4 straight victories and exactly when everyone believed they are Europa League material Rennes suffered a huimiliating defeat on home ground (4-0 to Montpellier) followed by another clear defeat (2-0 at Bastia).
Important winger Ntep is not that inspired anymore, play-maker Doucoure often misses the target for simple passes and striker Toivonen is slower than ever. But with Rennes you never know, they may play like world champions all of a sudden without any-kind of notice.
Hosts will welcome back fullback M’Bengue after suspension.
Opponents Reims weren’t involved in the midweek Cup so they may be a bit fresher. Recently Reims’s defenders seem tired and always a step behind opponents. As a consequence Reims started conceding many goals and every single action has the potential of being decisive. It is true they are also more efficient upfront, but without a confident defense it can all be in vain.
Guests will have even more defensive problems this round as central defender Tacalfred will be suspended. Most likely he will be replaced by Weber who was injured for a long period this season and was mostly a substitute afterwards.
Upfront Reims look pretty decent with wingers Moukandjo and Diego in excellent form.
This will be a difficult encounter with Rennes unconvincing lately and a bit tired and Reims having clear defensive problems.
UPDATE: Rennes will miss defender Diagne through suspension.
