Rennes – Lille Preview

Rennes Lille

RENNES

Last round Rennes ended up playing against 9 after opponents Nantes got two red cards. But even before the red cards Rennes were the ones controlling the game and imposing the rythm. It is true that Rennes scored while in numerical superiority but chances are the outcome would have been the same even without the red cards.

Winger Ntep scored his first goal of the season and most of Rennes’ actions involved Ntep one way or another. He is an extremely talented player and it’s a miracle how come Rennes managed to keep him for another season. But most importantly it seems he is enjoying his time at Rennes and is not in pursuit of fame and glory like most players his age.

Striker Sio scored again reaching a total of 3 goals in 5 games. This a great number for a player who once was considered a major talent and even got to play in Bundesliga but failed to adapt and is on the road ever since.

Rennes will welcome back winger Henrique and midfielder Fernandes after suspension.

LILLE

It was no surprise to see Lille taking part in another goalless draw (the third one this season…) 0-0 away at Lyon. Lille’s most active player winger Boufal missed through suspension and so there was a celebration every time Lille managed to push the game in the other half…

Boufal will return this round but unfortunately that won’t make the offensive potential sky rocket and Lille will once again rely mostly on fullbacks Corchia and Sidibe for creating actions.

Both of them are skilled players but they receive little help from teammates, and aren’t able to do everything on their own and end up focusing on the defensive phase.

Midfielder Balmont suffered an injury and most probably will sit out.

Rennes will once again miss keeper Costil but that is no reason to worry when up against toothless Lille. With Rennes in top form and Lille lacking offensive resources this game should have mostly one direction. Rennes -0.25 at 1.98

UPDATE: Rennes will have to do without fullback Baal.
