Although they won and dominated the entire game PSG’s performance against Apoel in Champions League was a let down. They opened the score even before opponents had the chance to settle in the field (in minute 1) but couldn’t find a way to increase their lead for the rest of the game (finished 1-0).
If anybody needed proof of PSG’s offensive inefficiency now they have it. It’s been a while since Ibrahimovic got injured and ever-since it happened PSG rely mostly on aggressive pressure for scoring goals. This is how we can explain PSG’s inability to win by convincing margins regardless the clear domination of opponents.
Ibrahimovic resumed training but it may be too soon for him to be in the lineup.
Hosts will have to do without fullback Van der Wiel and central midfielder Motta, both of them suspended. Van der Wiel’s absence won’t be felt as replacement Aurier is a reliable player, but Motta’s suspension will force PSG to be a bit more offensive as most likely Cabaye (who is more attacking-minded) will take Motta’s place in the lineup.
Marseille will also have to do without two suspended players, midfielder Ayew and defender Romao. Defender Morel is also suspended but he was injured anyway.
On the other hand Marseille will welcome back fullback Djadjedje after suspension and this will compensate for the absence of Romao.
Due to the suspensions mentioned Marseille’s strength will be a bit diminished overall, but it’s not like Romao and Ayew are the most important or the most in-form players in the squad. Also, Marseille have valuable players on the bench like Alessandrini and Lemina who can successfully replace any regular.
Marseille made two wrong steps recently, losing away at Lyon and at Rennes in Cup. Still, overall Marseille were not bad and succeeded in imposing their style. Most important players (Gignac, Payet and Thauvin) may have been a bit tired but there is no doubt they will find extra motivation and determination in-front of PSG.
At the back defender N’Koulou is in amazing form and even managed to score last round (won 2-1 against Lens). PSG’s wasteful offensive players are in for some hard times with N’Koulou as opponent.
PSG heavily dominate most opponents but it won’t be the case now as Marseille isn’t an average Ligue1 side. Hosts may very well be in charge of the game but reduced possession in PSG’s case means fewer goals (since they rely on aggressive pressure and prolonged possession for scoring). Also PSG aren’t rock solid in defense and top talents like Gignac, Payet and Thauvin could definitely speculate and hit on counter. Marseille +0.75 at 2.06
