Nice – Lyon Preview

Although Nice lost last round (2-0 away at Evian) they are safe from relegation.

Coach Puel used many youngsters in key departments and eased opponents’ job. In goal 19 years old Hassen started instead of experienced Ospina. In central midfield 17 years old Rafetraniaina partnered 21 years old Mendy, while upfront 17 years old Maupay was the sole striker.

There’s not much motivation for Nice nowadays and coach Puel is known for banking on young players and trying to develop their abilities. But with this being the final game of the season and in-front of own fans Nice may use the first team once again.

Central defender Bodmer and striker Cvitanich will return after being suspended last round.

Lyon got an early red card last round against Lorient and failed to increase the lead and secure the 5th position that will take them to Europa League next season (lost 1-0).

Even in 10 Lyon controlled the game and imposed the rythm but opponents concentrated forces in the defensive phase and it was almost impossible for Lyon in numerical inferiority to find the net.

Creative midfielders Grenier and Gourcuff started only on the bench as they just returned from injury. By the time they entered the game teammates were already exhausted and couldn’t threaten the opponents that much.

Lyon will have to do without midfielder Ferri and fullback Dabo who are suspended.

Nice may not have any motivation left and could use a couple of inexperienced players, but they are still a well put together group with an inventive coach always ready to surprise.

UPDATE: Nice will miss keeper Ospina who is already in Colombia preparing for the World Cup. Lyon will miss midfielder Gourcuff who suffered an injury again.
