Nantes St Etienne Preview

nantes st etienne preview

Although coach Der Zakarian rotated frequently, especially in the offensive department, Nantes seemed exhausted just before he winter break. They recorded five consecutive draws and seemed pretty happy with those results.

The transfer window just opened and Nantes already made a few moves. Midfielder Deaux (was mostly a bench warmer recently) left the squad and Gillet arrived from Anderlecht. It is rumored that attacking midfielder Gabriel Obertan from Newcastle may also join, but at the moment there is nothing official.

Nantes have a young squad, full of enthusiasm, and only the low level of chemistry is to be blamed for the poor results. Nantes have tremendous potential, especially in the attacking phase, and pretty soon they should start scoring more goals and get positive results.

Shameful performance form St Etienne away at amateurs Raon L’Etape in the French Cup. St Etienne used the best possible team but managed to qualify only after penalties.

Although according to stats St Etienne have scored at least 1 goal per game, their biggest problem is by far the offensive inefficiency. The goals scored so far are mostly the merit of attacking midfielders, who make extra efforts in every single game in order to compensate for forwards’ mediocrity.

Things may change in this second part of the season as St Etienne transferred-in forward Alexander Soderlund from Rosenborg. Soderlund had a great season in Norway and was crowned top scorer with a total of 22 goals. Still, football is a bit different in France and only time will tell if Soderlund will manage to adapt.

It is reported that St Etienne are also after El Ghanassy, a promising young talent who also had a productive season in Norway.

Guests will have to do without central defender Perrin.

Once St Etienne’s new striker will settle we may see a totally different side. But until that happens they will continue to struggle and disappoint in the attacking phase. Nantes’ young and exuberant players have a great chance of starting 2016 with a positive result. Nantes -0.25 at 2.21
