Nantes Lyon Preview

nantes lyon preview

Nantes controlled the game against Bastia last round, but in-spite creating a few good opportunities they failed to find the net (finished 0-0).

Opponents focused entirely on the defensive aspect and concentrated all forces in own half. In these circumstances it was very difficult for Nantes to find any open spaces. Luckily for Nantes things should be different against Lyon who don’t hesitate to adventure upfront and open up.

Although they haven’t scored in the last two rounds Nantes are pretty active in the attacking phase and players seem to be in-form and very determined.

Nantes will welcome back defender Gomis after suspension but will have to do without midfielder Bedoya who got a red card last week. Keeper Riou is doubtful after suffering an injury against Bastia.

Last round we had proof of Lyon’s decline (lost 4-2 to Montpellier). It was the first time this season Lyon conceded 4 goals. This never happened in Champions League, where they are usually clearly outplayed, and it only shows how serious the situation is.

The primary factor for this decline is Valbuena’s sudden loss of form. He is clearly affected by the sex tape scandal in which he is involved, and although he is only a victim in the entire affair, his morale dropped considerably.

Playmaker Grenier returned to action last round after a couple of months of inactivity, played for about 40 minutes, but he seemed very confused and couldn’t keep up with the rythm of the game.

With nobody to organize Lyon in midfield they are doomed to continue the decline.

Guests will miss defender Yanga-Mbiwa who is suspended. Keeper Lopes suffered an injury in training and may sit out.

Even if Lyon lack an in-form playmaker, they won’t sit back and defend, it’s not in their DNA to do so. Nantes will have plenty of space available to exploit and take advantage of Lyon’s decline. Nantes +0.25 at 2.02
