Montpellier were pretty close of getting away with a draw from their trip to St Etienne last round (lost 1-0).
Although they haven’t found the net, players involved in the offensive phase seem active and created a few dangerous opportunities. Even substitute forward Berigaud who played for about 15 minutes was very determined and was close to finding the equalizer.
At the back they defended with lucidity for most of the game and opponents had major problems when trying to get inside the penalty box.
If Montpellier would have been constant in efforts they could easily sit in a position that would take them to Europe next season. But unfortunately you never know what to expect from Montpellier and they always go from one extreme to the other.
Rennes were lucky to win against Nice last week away (finished 2-1). Especially in the first half Rennes were under heavy domination and keeper Costil was the only one that denied Nice a bigger advantage at half time (Nice were leading 1-0 at the break).
At the back there were many defensive errors coming from fullbacks and central defenders alike. Upfront only in the second half Rennes managed to create a few opportunities and the winning goal came in the dying seconds after a placement mistake from Nice’s substitute keeper. Once in a while Rennes do have moments in which they play amazing offensive football, with one touch passes and fast actions carried in all areas of the field. The only problem is those moments seem to be too rare…
Renens will welcome back central midfielder Doucoure after suspension.
Montpelier’s inconsistency and Rennes’ moments of fast paced football are the only factors standing against a bet on home win.
