Montpellier Rennes Preview

montpellier rennes preview

MONTPELLIER

Montpellier had a confident performance in the first half last round away at St Etienne (they were leading 1-0 at the break), but the pressure intensified in second half and they completely collapsed (lost 3-1).

Montpellier’s major weakness is the lack of a skilled striker. They have Mounie and Ninga, but they don’t have killer instincts and aren’t golden boot material. In these conditions playmaker Boudebouz also tries to take part in the finishing phase, wasting a lot of energy in the process.

Newly arrived fullback Vanden Borre is a solid player, but has yet to adapt to the style in Ligue 1. Last round he had huge problems and was often outplayed by opponents.

RENNES

Although they won 2-0, Rennes were far from convincing last week against Nancy. But the good news is that playmaker Gourcuff scored his first goal of the season and seems to be in excellent form. Furthermore he is not injured yet (used to get injured once every 2 rounds) and is fully enjoying his time on the field. Gourcuff is a highly skilled player and can be a real asset for any team in Ligue 1, if he is not sidelined.

Rennes still haven’t received an official offer for winger Ntep, so once he recovers from injury Ntep should be in the lineup.

Just like Montpellier, Rennes also lack a solid striker and need to rely on midfielders for applying the finishing touch. Striker Sio found the net last round and his confidence may have increased a bit, but the opposition encountered last week was at Ligue 2 level.

Guests may once again miss midfielder Chantome who is injured.

BETTING

Odds are very disproportionate for what should be a balanced encounter. The value is on Rennes, but maybe it’s best to wait for 20 minutes and see how the teams perform before placing any bets.

UPDATE: Rennes will have to do without midfielders Ntep, Chantome and Sylla
