Monaco – Nantes Preview

Even if they won 2-0 Monaco had a disappointing performance in the midweek Cup game against Guingamp.

Opponents got a red card after half an hour but they still found ways to push the game forward and create problems for Monaco. It’s not like Monaco used the second team, no, they started in the best formula possible.

They kept it tight in defense like they always do, but upfront they seem to lack creativity. Monaco’s 2nd goal arrived late in extra-time and that’s no achievement against an opponent playing in 10 and belonging to the lower half of the table.

The good news is that striker Berbatov scored his first goal after returning from injury and hopefully it will help him pick up some form and confidence and it will improve Monaco’s attacking phase.

Monaco will miss defensive midfielder Bakayoko while central defender Carvalho is doubtful after suffering an injury in the Cup game.

Nantes failed to score in both games played so far in 2015, even if last round they started with 2 pure strikers Bammou and Bangoura. Nantes usually play in a 4-5-1 system and it’s not that often we can see them using 2 strikers.

Bammou showed impressive aerial skills and was very active but unfortunately Bangoura was mediocre at most.

The defense looks solid especially with the constant support received from central midfielders.

Guests could welcome back defensive midfielder Hansen but it’s nothing certain in this moment.

Both sides are defensively solid and in the same time lack inspiration in the attacking phase. No doubt Monaco will take the initiative but they will have problems in trying to penetrate inside Nantes’ penalty box. Spectators shouldn’t get their hopes up as a game without many scoring opportunities is foreseen.

UPDATE: Besides Carvalho and Bakayoko guests will also miss midfielder Toulalan
