Somehow Monaco conceded only once last round (1-1 against Rennes) but the actual defensive performance was not any better than in previous rounds when Monaco were letting in 3 goals per game.
Coach Jardim decided that grandpa Carvalho is guilty of the poor defensive display and substituted him with Wallace. Wallace is a bit more agile and was more helpful (even scored last round), but the overall defensive strength was not improved by much and defenders were once again outplayed and had to foul opponents in order to stop them (3 of Monaco’s defenders got booked).
Besides a couple of clear chances opponents also missed a penalty, so Monaco were pretty lucky to get away with only one goal conceded.
Upfront Monaco started with El Shaarawy in the lone striker position, Lemar and Dirar on the flanks and Bernardo Silva as play-maker. They were not that incisive as usual but this round Moutinho should take back his place as play-maker, and maybe even Cavaleiro and Carrillo will make the team and Monaco will have more speed and creativity.
Defender Carvalho is suspended so Wallace should continue in the lineup.
After a couple of disappointing performances it seems that Lyon bounced back last round after winning 1-0 against Reims.
Although they scored only once Lyon were pretty pushy in the offensive phase and constantly cornered opponents. Valbuena was in a continuous move and never ceased to created numerical superiority. Forward Lacazette is still not in the best form and even missed a penalty last round, but recovered confidence only after a couple of minutes and scored the winner. Hopefully that goal will help Lacazette find some form and pick up rythm.
In defense fullback Jallet once again advanced with every opportunity he got and teammates were forced to make extra efforts and compensate for his absence. Opponents were not that quick to speculate, but against Monaco it will be an entire different story…
Central defender Bisevac suffered an injury and is doubtful at the moment
Last season this game ended in a goalless draw and was one of the most boring encounters of the year, but now all factors point in a different direction. Both sides are focusing more on the offensive aspect and this could turn out to be a goal fest. Over 2.25 goals at 1.91
UPDATE: It seems that the Discipline Commission decided to suspend central defender Raggi as well, so Monaco will miss both regular central defenders (Raggi and Carvalho are suspended) plus fullback Coentrao (injured). For Lyon fullback Morel got injured and, since Bedimo is also out, it will be interesting to see who will start as left back.
