Last round away at Nantes it was the first time when Marseille started with both Gignac and Batshuayi in the lineup (lost 1-0).
But young forward Batshuayi played as an attacking midfielder and couldn’t achieve full potential. As a consequence Marseille weren’t able to threaten the opponent from open play and the few chances they created came only following set pieces.
Marseille are sitting on 3 consecutive defeats but only last round the performance was a real letdown. The defense played at an amateurish level, especially keeper Mandanda, and at times it even seemed defenders were clearing the way for opponents on purpose.
Marseille will welcome back midfielder Payet after suspension. Fullback Mendy may also return after injury.
Really poor defending from Lorient last round against Toulouse (lost 1-0). Besides unforced personal errors (simply giving the ball away to opponents) Lorient’s defenders were easily outplayed by common dribbling moves and simple passes.
Upfront they reached opponents’ penalty box a few times but were too nervous and failed to find the net. Most likely they will have even more problems this round since forward Jeannot suffered an injury and will sit out.
Lorient will once again miss defender Lautoa and winger Guerreiro while fullback Gassama is doubtful.
In poor form, low on confidence and with key players injured positive results are only a distant dream for Lorient.
Lorient is the perfect opponent for Marseille to get back on the right track and try to catch a Champions League position for next season. Marseille – 1.25 at 2.12.
UPDATE: Marseille will once again have to do without fullback Mendy
