Another disappointing performance from Marseille last round away at Guingamp (lost 2-1). Marseille held more possession and were a bit more aggressive in the offensive phase (in comparison to the first round), but this time the defensive display was a real let down.
Fullbacks Rekik and Sakai are very slow and don’t fit in a system with emphasis on the flanks. They often advance, but easily lose possession or are caught on the wrong foot when opponents counter. When fullback Bedimo will return from injury, he will replace Rekik in the lineup and the overall strength should increase (Bedimo is doubtful at the moment).
Only two rounds played so far, but it’s clear that Marseille increase the aggressiveness level after poor results. This week they should be more offensive minded and combative following last week’s performance.
Lorient are undisputed leaders at red cards, after receiving 3 red cards in only 2 rounds. Sometimes Lorient can be really slow, and that’s an explanation for the red cards, but they are also very immature, and that’s another reason for the negative record so far.
They had plenty of chances last round against Bastia, and it was a surprise they didn’t score (lost 3-0). They missed both regular central defenders Toure and Lautoa (Lautoa most probably will miss again), but that is no excuse for the huge spaces in defense. Although Toure and Lautoa are very experienced, things didn’t look any better in the first round when both of them were available, so nobody should expect any defensive improvement if they return.
Even if the failed to score, forwards Waris and Moukandjo were once again very active, but opponents were highly organized and closed down all spaces in defense.
Lorient will be without forward Jeannot (received 6 month suspension) and midfielder NDong who are suspended. Jeannot would have been only on the bench anyway, and NDong was always more active in the defensive phase.
This should be a really entertaining encounter with Marseille pushing forward from the first whistle and Lorient embracing an open encounter. over 2.5 goals at 1.95
UPDATE: Hosts will have to do without Bedimo, Alessandrini, Diaby and Sane.
