Marseille – Caen Preview

marseille caen

Many important players left Marseille this summer, almost half a team that could easily compete at a Champions League level.

Gignac, Payet, Imbula, Ayew, Fanni and Morel decided to part ways with Marseille. The replacements brought-in are far from the value of the mentioned players and the most notable names are central defenders NKoudou and Rekik, midfielders Diaby and Sarr and winger Ocampos.

Marseille is definitely weaker in comparison to last season but every cloud has a silver lining as now players like Batshuayi and Alessandrini can be starters. They are extremely talented and now they can only improve their skills and grow in value. Last season they were mostly bench warmers because nobody could have replaced Payet and Gignac in the lineup.

Marseille have huge potential with Alessandrini and Thauvin on the flanks and Batshuayi in the striker position. Young Ocampos is also a talented winger who can play on both sides and can assure the team stays fresh in the final 30 or 20 minutes.

Although they have made a couple of transfers Caen will look pretty much the same as last season. Strike Duhamel is back after the loan spell at Evian, but he has been placed on the transfer list together with winger Raspentino. On the other hand Caen have lost winger Koita, forward Privat, defenders Calve and Musavu-King (none of them key players).

Fast wingers Nangis and Bazile should be Caen’s most dangerous players this season. They are capable of lightning actions down the flanks but unfortunately the skills of the lone striker Delort are questionable and all their efforts can be in vain.

Marseille should start this season in force as players that were once only reserves are determined to prove themselves and become leaders. Caen can always be a difficult opponent but until they find a proper striker they won’t be able to surprise on counters. Marseille -1 at 1.98
