Marseille – Bastia Preview

Central defender Diawara is only on the bench for Marseille but they still concede 2 goals per game, so nobody can blame Diawara anymore.

Even if Marseille conceded twice last round (drew 2-2 vs Toulouse) there were no more defensive blunders. Both Toulouse’s goals came after corners as from open play they weren’t able to open up Marseille.

It was very annoying for Marseille to be equalized twice from corner. A lot of frustration accumulated that will most likely make them more determined against Bastia.

Upfront everything looks great for Marseille, with attacking midfielder Valbuena being in excellent form. He is more creative and dangerous than ever. The same goes for striker Gignac. With these 2 having big playing appetite, the other offensive players (wingers Thauvin and Payet) are also automatically more active. Payet even scored last round after continuously missing the target since the end of November…

Good news as Andre Ayew resumed training. His injury was long and complicated and most probably he will be only on the bench for a few rounds.

Fullback Morel is till out injured, while central midfielder Cheyrou is doubtful.

Weird game between Bastia and Guingamp last round (Bastia won 3-2). Spectators could barely see an attempt on target in 1st half, while in the 2nd half they were bombarded with 5 goals.

Defensively Bastia seem more fragile than usual. On the flanks fullbacks failed to block any crosses. I don’t remember Guingamp having so many chances, but most of the balls inside the box (2 chances) were converted…

Central defenders were slow and failed to anticipate opponents’ moves.

Bastia played with just 1 defensive midfielder last round, so maybe this is why they looked more fragile. Now it remains to be seen how will they perform with central midfielder Cahuzac back from suspension.

In-spite scoring 3 goals Bastia were not impressive at all upfront. I am having troubles deciding who was their most important player. Some may say it was Boudebouz, but delivering an assist from corner and scoring a penalty doesn’t really make you man of the match.

Striker Cisse made an assist last round but so far he is a total letdown. He’s got good vision, but seems too heavy, lacks speed and moves in slow motion.

I think Bastia will be sure victims. It’s about time for Marseille to stop conceding stupid goals and Bastia is the perfect opponent for that. Marseille already stopped making defensive errors, if they will concentrate more at set pieces clean sheets should follow.

The price of 2.05 for Marseille -1 (with money back if they win by 1 goals) is definitely worth some medium stakes.
