Lyon – St Etienne Preview

As expected Lyon didn’t have much problems last round against Bastia. They mildly dominated the entire encounter and in the end the 2-0 victory was well deserved.

Creative midfielder Grenier returned after a couple of months of injury, played for about half an hour and seemed hungry for action. His performance was surprisingly good (even managed to deliver an assist) considering the long period of inactivity. Grenier may be exactly what Lyon needed, a confident and skilled play-maker, and his comeback will definitely be of tremendous help in Lyon’s attempt of winning the tittle.

Lyon will have to do without fullback Dabo who suffered an injury last round.

Although they won 1-0 St Etienne delivered a surprisingly poor performance last round against Nantes. St Etienne often found themselves under pressure and kept a clean sheet only because opponents have one of the weakest offenses in the tournament.

St Etienne are also pushing for a Champions League presence next season and although their objective may be a bit far fetched they do have extremely talented players in all departments.

Fullback Tabanou is doubtful after he got out injured last week.

The games between Lyon and St Etienne always bring out the best in everyone and form is not really relevant as players double their efforts and they always outdo themselves.

Hosts do have a small advantage as suggested by the odds but St Etienne can always surprises like they did 2 rounds ago against Monaco (1-1) and 3 rounds ago against Lille (won 2-0).

UPDATE: St Etienne have winger Hamouma and fullback Tabanou in the squad but according to latest reports they are not fully fit and their presence in the field is questionable.

Lyon: A.Lopes, Gorgelin – Bedimo, Zeffane, Rose, Umtiti, B.Koné, Jallet – Tolisso, Ferri, Gonalons, Grenier, Malbranque, Ghezzal – Lacazette, Njie, Fekir, Yattara

St Etienne: Ruffier, Moulin – Théophile-Catherine, Perrin, Clerc, Tabanou, Baysse, Brison – Corgnet, Nguemo, Lemoine, Diomandé, Clément – Erding, Van Wolfswinkel, Monnet-Paquet, Gradel, Hamouma
