Lyon – Rennes Preview

Lyon had a couple of impressive performances in the pre-season friendlies and even destroyed Shakhtar Donetsk (4-1). They were also involved in 2 official games in Europa League in which they clearly outplayed Czech opponents Mlada Boleslav (overall score 6-2).

Besides selling forward Gomis, who was under-performing for about 2 seasons, Lyon kept most of the squad intact assuring continuity. Believe it or not Lyon may actually be more efficient without Gomis as many balls were simply wasted once he entered the scene.

The biggest loss in the transfer window may be fullback Lopes who went back to Portugal, but the good news is Lyon managed to transfer-in Jallet from PSG who is more than capable of replacing Lopes.

Lyon have a virtually young squad, with players that have been together for a couple of years already so playing relations are at a maximum level.

Hosts will be without suspended defender Kone, while fullback Bedimo and midfielder Gourcuff are also out injured.

Rennes were very active on the transfer market but it seems that their overall strength has diminished.

The most important arrivals are the ones of midfielders Bruls and Andre, but many other players were brought in as well, and surely coach Montanier will rotate a lot in the first rounds trying to find the best formula.

Rennes lost a couple of important players in the transfer window, starting with defender Boye who was way more stable than regular Kana-Biyik, winger Pitroipa who had iron lungs also transferred-out, just like midfielder Feret and key winger Alessandrini.

Guests will be without midfielders Pajot (suspended) and newly arrived Bruls (injured).

Rennes will struggle this season, both when it comes to scoring goals and also keeping a clean sheet (like we could see in the pre-season friendlies). Value, chemistry, home venue, form, you name it, everything is in favor of Lyon. Lyon -0.75 at 2.20

UPDATE: Besides Kone, Bedimo and Gourcuff, Lyon will also miss defender Bisevac and midfielder Grenier. This is a bit too much and especially Grenier’s absence changes the situation as they are left without creativity in midfield. NO BET in these conditions.
