Lyon Montpellier Preview

lyon montpellier preview

Really poor display from Lyon last week away at Nice (lost 3-0). Although Lyon held more possession they wasted it in midfield and all their attempts to infiltrate the penalty box were in vain.

Attacking midfielder Valbeuna is currently involved in a sex tape blackmail scandal, and although he is the victim, all this negative publicity is affecting his playing style. His passes lost accuracy and he is not that determined anymore, especially when pressing opponents.

The two forwards Beauvue and Lacazette receive less balls than usual and it’s only a matter of time until they lose form. Beauvue could not even make the lineup in the Champions League game against Gent (Lyon lost 2-1). It was no surprise to see Lyon losing in Champions League as they were never real contenders on that stage.

Fullback Jallet suffered an injury that will keep him on the sidelines for about two months.

This is a good moment for Montpellier who finally managed to put together two wins for the first time this season. Both victories were recorded on home ground, but the increased morale and the good form will surely help in away games as well.

Last week Montpellier scored 3 goals for the first time this season, and although one single result doesn’t make a rule, it was clearly visible that attacking players were bursting with confidence.

Although they conceded 1.21 goals per game so far Montpellier’s biggest weakness was the offensive softness. They were unable to keep the ball upfront for long and there was always pressure on defenders. There won’t be a drastic change all of a sudden but they are certainly on the right track.

While Lyon suddenly reduced rythm Montpellier seem to have solved their biggest problem. Lyon deserve to be favorites but bookies severely underestimate Montpellier who are owning the moment. Montpellier +1 at 1.88
