Lyon – Evian Preview

At the moment Lyon is the most in-form Ligue1 team. Not PSG, not Monaco, not any other club but Lyon.

In the midweek Cup game away at Yzeure they afforded to the luxury of using only 2 regulars in the lineup (Bisevac and Gourcuff) and only 2 others entered from the bench (Gomis and Bedimo).

Defensively few teams in Ligue1 have the creativity to open up Lyon. Central midfielders Gonalons and Fofana are always on alert and constantly providing a helping hand for defenders. Opponents have problems in getting past Lyon’s 1st line of defense (central midfielders), not to mention penetrating the penalty box…

Greier and Gonalons should be a scare for most defenders in this league. If not from open play, then from set pieces. In-fact, at the moment Lyon is the most dangerous team when it comes to free-kicks. Grenier’s precision and power is just amazing.

Fullback Miguel Lopes will miss because of injury. He’s performances were impressive lately and substitute Zeffane undoubtedly has a lower level, but still, I wouldn’t worry too much both because of the toothless opponent and because of Lyon’s overall defensive power.

Evian have problems in all departments. Upfront they create only a few chances per game and most the times top-scorer Berigaud misses the target. Like previously said, he is just a pale shadow of the player we saw in the first rounds of the season.

The suspension of winger Sougou will further reduce the offensive potential. Veteran Barbosa will most likely play from the start, but at 37 his lungs started to play tricks on him. It will be like taking candy from a baby for Lyon’s defensive players…

Central midfielder Tie Bi is still out injured, meaning that Kone will again substitute him. Kone is slow and often outrun by opponents. As a consequence he gives away many free-kicks, some of them in dangerous positions. This kind of attitude against a team like Lyon, who has Grenier, will be suicidal.

It was a miracle Rennes couldn’t score against Evian last round (finished 0-0), especially since Evian’s central defenders make at least 1 decisive error per game.

In-form Lyon should be able to put a few past Evian’s confused defense. The price of 1.84 for Lyon -1 (with money back if they win just by 1) can be taken with medium to high confidence.

Also, with Kone in the lineup for Evian, I see Grenier converting a free-kick. Grenier to score at 3.10 with low stakes.
