Lyon have a good chance of taking the group leadership and making a big step towards qualification.
Last week in Ligue1 they completely dominated the game against Valenciennes, but unfortunately couldn’t take all the points (finished 1-1). The opponents concentrated only on defending making it very difficult for Lyon to find any open spaces. Whenever a tiny hole appeared Gomis somehow managed completely miss the target or aimed directly at the keeper. Gomis also scored Lyon’s only goal, but that’s not enough to compensate the missed chances and his nonchalant attitude.
Fortunately for us, and for their fans worldwide, Gomis will only be a substitute this game (most probably). Briand can replace him or young Benzia after having recovered from injury.
Creative midfielder Grenier will also be available again, after being suspended in Ligue1, increasing the offensive potential.
Besides Fofana out (or Malbranque) – Grenier in, and Gomis out – Briand in, Lyon should look exactly like last round, meaning they’ll use the best team possible. The result vs Valenciennes was pretty disappointing and Lyon will try hard to make everyone forget about that wrong step. They did exactly the same against Rijeka (used the best team possible) about a month ago, when they were coming after a bad run in Ligue1.
Opponents Betis seem to be doomed. They have no competition for the last place in Primera and will come to Lyon after shamefully losing 4-0 in the Seville derby. It was a devastating loss for the morale.
I’ve seen bits of the game and Betis were just clueless with a chaotic strategy. Not only they could not pose danger upfront, but even at the back they could not defend at a decent level.
In comparison to that game Betis will be without offensive players Vadillo, Molina (top-scorer) and Castro. Replacing them will be a couple of youths Pepelu, Abeledo and Sergio. None of them played any official game for Betis this season.
They could even use the best team possible (it won’t happen), but in their current state of mind won’t be able to take anything from Lyon. The French side is truly solid at the back and Betis (without top-scorer) will have huge problems in approaching the net.
With Gomis on the bench hopefully Lyon will convert more of their chances and will win without many emotions. At 2.00, the price on Lyon to win is just too high.
