It was a huge surprise to see Lyon get eliminated from the Cup. They scored early, relaxed and somehow got equalized in the dying seconds by Ligue2 side Lens (lost in extra time eventually).
Lyon used most regulars and that’s what makes the result even more disappointing. Lyon were without central defender Bisevac, central midfielder Fofana and attacking midfielder Gourcuff. At the moment of writing there are no news regarding their health, so their presence on Sunday is under a question mark.
Lyon are still one of the most in-form Ligue1 sides in 2014. The only problems is they seem to be somewhat superficial in the defensive phase. They played 10 games in 2014 and conceded 8 goals. That’s almost 1 goals per game, a ratio worrying for a team aspiring at European action next season.
Lyon will travel to Ukraine next week to play against Chernomorets in Europa League. It’s not necessarily that Europa League is more important than Ligue1, but if they managed to reach the European spring, they may at least treat it seriously and honor it.
The win over Rennes last round proved to be an easy task for Ajaccio (won 3-1). They looked good, especially upfront where midfielders Andre, Lasne and Cavalli are in good form and constantly push the team forward. That win gave them a confidence boost and they already started talking about avoiding relegation, which I personally consider to be only wishful thinking…
But it’s not important if Ajaccio will relegate or not in the end, what’s important is that in this moment they are confident, and offensive players are in-form. Up against a Lyon side that could wish to avoid extra tiredness and not make big efforts, Ajaccio may have a chance.
With Lyon always conceding, Ajaccio can also find the net, especially in the conditions mentioned above. The price of 2.00 for Ajaccio to score deserves a medium sized bet.
