Disappointing result from Lorient last round away at Caen (lost 3-2). Lorient surprised their opponents early in the game (2-0 up after 20 minutes), but got a red card and were forced to play in numerical inferiority for more than an hour.
Even in 10, Lorient still embraced an offensive strategy and tried to make the most of forwards’ Waris and Moukandjo. This season we should see many goals when Lorient play, especially if their opponents are also into offensive football.
Central defender Toure is often outplayed and fouling opponents is the sole solution to stop them (even got a red card last round), and captain Lautoa seems slow and out-of-form at the moment.
Young central defender Koffi looked disorientated last round after taking Toure’s place in the lineup. Most probably Koffi will be a starter this week, since Toure is suspended, furthermore diminishing the defensive strength.
Hosts will miss injured midfielder Marveaux.
Bastia were very solid and compact in the first round against PSG. French champions spent most of their time struggling to approach Bastia’s net, and found the winner late in second half.
Bastia lost two important players from last season (Ayite and Palmieri), but only the offensive phase is affected. Newly arrived attacking players (Crivelli, Saint Maximin, Bifouma) are very energetic, and can add a bit of pace to the offensive actions.
It will be really difficult to open up Bastia this season, as they once again seem highly organized and all players participate in the defensive phase.
There is no doubt Lorient are more resourceful upfront and they will concentrate primarily on exploiting their attacking potential. But they will encounter tough position, and no matter how skilled Waris and Moukandjo may be, it is really difficult to penetrate a defense in 8. On the other hand Bastia’s new attacking players could take advantage of Lorient’s loose defense, especially since they must overcome their limits and earn a place in the lineup. BASTIA +0.5 at 2.07
