Lille are sitting on 2 consecutive wins and it seems they finally picked up some form. Defenders regained confidence and thanks to the support received from midfielders Lille are easily able to stop most incoming actions.
Upfront things also look better mainly thanks to play-maker Lopes who has been very active lately and was involved in most of Lille’s recent goals.
Unfortunately for hosts Lopes will miss this round due to suspension. His absence will heavily reduce the offensive strength and Lille may once again struggle to create tunnels.
His place in the lineup will be taken by either Meite, Boufal or Mendes but none of them has Lopes’ qualities.
Lille will also miss fullback Beria who suffered an injury last round.
Even if they won Rennes had a disappointing performance last round against Metz (finished 1-0).
After opening the score early in the first half Rennes gave up initiative and withdrew in defense. Metz constantly pushed the game forward, cornered Rennes a couple of times and only thanks to keeper’s Costil great form Rennes got away with all points.
This is actually Rennes’ strategy, strike fast and concentrate all forces in defense afterwards. But things are going to be a bit more difficult against Lille as they are very organized and most probably the game will have only direction from the first minute…
If Lopes would have been available Lille would have probably been one of the best bets in Ligue1 this round. But without him they are slow and predictable in the attacking phase and Rennes may have enough endurance power, especially since they are accustomed with defending for long periods.
UPDATE: Besides play-maker Lopes Lille will also miss fullbacks Beria and Sidibe. Rennes welcome back midfielder Andre after injury.
