Lille – Marseille Preview

Lille won 1-0 in the end away at Valenciennes but it was a tough match. Even before they got the red card, Lille had clear problems in approaching the box.

They started the game with Rodelin on the bench and Meite in the play-maker role. The latter barely touched the ball and none of his passes made any difference. Kalou tried taking things on his own, but his lack of speed made him a sure victim.

Only in the 2nd half when Rodelin entered the scene Lille managed to score. Lille’s reliance on Rodelin should be worrying to say the least. The days when play-maker Martin will be back from injury are not far away and Rodelin will once again be only a substitute, just like at the beginning of the season.

Fullback Beria got a red and will miss this game through suspension. Young Sidibe will be the one replacing him. Sidibe is a talented player, but maybe too talented. I remember when Lille played PSG and Sidibe’s goal was to put the ball through Ibrahimovic’s legs. He did it in the end but lost many balls in the process and annoyed teammates. At this young age he is only a showoff.

I underestimated Marseille last round. Defensively Marseille are in top form, with central defender N’Koulou managing really impressive tackles, same as defensive midfielder Romao. It is really hard for any team playing against Marseille to get near keeper Mandanda.

At the moment Marseille’s best player is undoubtedly winger Payet. He’s enjoying every single moment on the field and the collaboration with Valbuena and Gignac is almost telepathic.

Payet’s direct opponent will be young Sidibe. In a few years Sidibe could successfully deal with Payet, but not now. This battle could prove to be decisive for the final result. Adding to that is the fact that Payet knows Sidibe very well, seeing that last season Payet was at Lille.

Lille haven’t conceded 10 rounds already, but I think keeper Enyeama will take the ball out of the net at least once. Marseille at the moment have what it takes to end Lille’s good run.

Odds on Lille keep on dropping, but the value is on Marseille +0.5 at 1.96
