Lille – Marseille Preview

LILLE

The game between Guingamp and Lille last round played out as expected, with Lille in charge and struggling to open up a compact and determined side (finished 1-1)

The fact is that Lille aren’t very creative this season (in-fact for about two seasons already…) and rely most of all on forward Boufal both for creating chances and converting them. He scored again last week reaching a total of 4 goals so far.

Lille also try to create actions down the flanks, but truth be told this strategy is not really working out for them. Even if fullbacks / wingers have good speed and ball control the actions are predictable and are stopped way before becoming dangerous.

Lille will miss central defender Sunzu who is suspended but welcome back Mavuba, Corchia and Bautheac after suspension.

MARSEILLE

It’s official, Marseille is the most annoying Ligue1 side.

Last week Marseille scored early against Lorient and in-spite constantly pushing the game forward and creating scoring opportunities, they have failed to find the net again (finished 1-1 vs Lorient).

The biggest problem seems to be attacking midfielder Cabellla who hasn’t adapted yet (and maybe never will), but in-spite of that, he gets involved in most of Marseille’s actions, slowing down the game.

Coach Michel seems oblivious to this problem and doesn’t even try to search for a new formula that doesn’t involve Cabella.

In defense Marseille should be really powerful and it’s a miracle how come they keep conceding no matter the opponent.

In Europa League Marseille also had a disappointing defensive performance and conceded twice. Even if coach Michel decided to rest 3 regular defenders that is no excuse for the huge open spaces (Marseille lost 3-2 at Braga) Cabella started the Europa League game on the bench but will surely take back his place in the lineup in Ligue1.
