Lille Lyon Preview

lille lyon preview

Lille concentrated fully on defending last round away at PSG, and their strategy paid off, as they won an important point (finished 0-0).

They wouldn’t have had any chance of opening up PSG, especially since playmaker Boufal was suspended, so focusing entirely on defense was the smart thing to do.

Boufal will return this round and most probably Lille will switch back to normal tactics. Lille aren’t exactly a force when it comes to attacking, but overall they can pretty solid, and thanks to constant efforts they can always find the net.

Lyon had an easy game last round against Caen (won 4-1), but in-spite of the huge difference, Lyon seemed vulnerable in defense and a bit superficial upfront.

Best player wasn’t Valbuena or Lacazette as you may have expected, but midfielder Tolisso who was extremely active, scored once and also delivered two assists. If Valbuena had a decent performance, Lacazette played around with chances and lost possession with ease.

Lyon’s midfielders didn’t exactly participate in the defensive phase, and opponents could reach Lyon’s penalty box after only a few passes. The good news is that defenders Umtiti and Yanga-Mbiwa are in good form and were always on alert.

Bad news for Lyon as it seems that midfielder Tolisso suffered an injury and will miss a couple of rounds.

Lyon are always offensive minded (maybe this is why they are only 5th in the table and out of European competitions…) and this round won’t be any different. But it will be difficult against Lille who are highly organized and don’t give away any open spaces. If Lyon’s midfielders will neglect the defensive phase they risk losing all points.

UPDATE: Lille welcome back defender Basa but are still without forward Eder. Lyon’s midfielders Grenier and Gonalons are in the squad but they are not fully fit.

Lille: Enyeama, Elana – Corchia, Y.Koné, D.Sidibé, Soumaoro, Civelli, Basa – Mavuba, Balmont, Amadou, Boufal, M.Amalfitano, Bauthéac, R.Lopes – Benzia, Nangis, Tallo

Lyon: A.Lopes, Gorgelin – Bedimo, Yanga-Mbiwa, J.Morel, B.Koné, Jallet, Umtiti – Darder, Ferri, Gonalons, Grenier, Malbranque, Labidi, Ghezzal, Valbuena – Lacazette, Cornet, G.Perrin
