Guingamp – Valenciennes Preview

Guingamp changed the system last round and it had serious repercussions on their performance. From the classic 4-4-2 they went to 4-5-1, but the only problem was that all 3 central midfielders used to be only reserves. They were not accustomed with one another and with this system, so Guingamp’s midfield was like Swiss cheese (lost 5-1 at Bordeaux).

The regular central midfielders, Mathis (injured) and Sankhare (rest), didn’t start the game (Sankhare played about 30 minutes) and Guingamp were simply overwhelmed. 25 minutes into the game and they were already 3 goals down and gave up afterwards.

Against Valenciennes central midfielder Sankhare should be in the lineup. Guingamp will also be more motivated seeing they need to stay above the relegation zone (only 2 points difference).

Opponents Valenciennes also suffered a humiliating defeat last round, the only difference is theirs took place on home ground (lost 6-2 to Nantes).

There aren’t many adjectives to describe how loose Valenciennes’ defense was. Although they use 3 central midfielders, the support for the defense was nowhere to be seen. The spaces given away were huge and even a women’s team could have scored against Valenciennes.

Upfront they had to do without striker Waris (should return for this game) and coach Jacobs thought that young winger N’Guette could revitalize the offensive phase. He couldn’t have been more wrong but it wasn’t necessarily N’Guette’s fault, as all of Valenciennes’ players had iron legs, even veteran striker Pujol.

Hosts will fight for another season in Ligue1 with real chances, while guests will struggle to keep their salvation hopes alive (only mathematical chances to survive in Ligue1). In-spite the heavy defeat last week Guingamp have a better level of organization and chemistry which should be enough to secure the much needed 3 points. Guingamp to win at 1.97
