Besides changing the keeper and wingers Guingamp used the best team possible away at minnows Concarneau in the Cup. In spite of that, they managed to qualify only after extra time. The game was very intense, players made big efforts and signs of tiredness could appear on Saturday against PSG.
[restrict paid=true level=1] Leaving aside the Cup, Guingamp haven’t scored in Ligue1 for 4 rounds. Top scorer Yatabare scores only in Cup games against neighborhood teams like Concarneau or Bourg-Peronnas. In Ligue1 he can’t find the net since October.
2nd top-scorer central midfielder Sankhare is suspended for this game. Tough luck for Guingamp to play against the best defense in Ligue1 when their 1st scorer is out-of-form and 2nd one suspended.
Guingamp already have a defensive approach in every single game. They concentrate mainly on building actions on the flanks and send crosses inside the box. Needles to say it’s not really working out for them in terms of scoring goals.
But when it comes to defending Guingamp can be very impressive, especially on home ground. They agglomerate in own half and opponents have problems in finding any open spaces.
Usually PSG are very creative and are able to open up most defenses in the world. But in 2014 they are more hesitant than ever, despite trashing Nantes 5-0 last round.
In the 1st round of 2014 they had huge problems away at Ajacio against a defense in 5. The Cup game at Bordeaux followed when PSG could make the difference only in the final 10 minutes when Bordeaux were exhausted. Not to mention the Cup game on home ground against Montpellier (lost 2-1) that left a bitter taste and diminished players’ self esteem.
Against Montpellier keeper Sirigu, central defender Alex and fullback Maxwell were only on the bench. They should return to the lineup against Guingamp and increase the defensive potential.
PSG will hold possession but it will be mostly in midfield. If PSG will manage to score they will kill the game, no matter if it will be in the 1st or 2nd half. Players themselves are to dissapointed with their own performance for PSG to trash Guingamp. In fact some time will certainly pass until PSG will trash another team.
Given Guingamp’s defensive approach and lack of offensive potential, and PSG apathy as of late, there shouldn’t be many goals in this game. The odds on under 2.5 goals are just too high at 2.05. Medium confidence. [/restrict]
