Guingamp – Montpellier Preview

In-spite losing (1-0) Guingamp made a good game last round away at Lille.

At times they even took complete control of the game and were by far the better side. Guingamp also had a couple of important scoring opportunities but unfortunately they couldn’t find the target.

Winger Atik showed increased playing appetite and was extremely active.

In defense Guingamp were very organized and opponents despite holding prolonged possession had troubles in infiltrating the penalty box. In fact Guingamp only conceded in extra time after a marking mistake at a corner.

The decent performance last round could boost Guingamp’s confidence making them more aggressive and solid on their feet.

Hosts could welcome back defender Lemaitre after injury.

Although they haven’t conceded, Montpellier showed defensive fragility last round against Valenciennes (finished 0-0). Defenders were slow, failed to synchronize, and often got caught on the wrong foot. Things may change a bit this round as Montpellier will welcome back central defender Hilton and fullback Congre who missed last round due to suspension.

But regardless the defensive hesitation Montpellier were the ones dictating the rythm last round. They constantly tried to apply pressure (not succeeded every time…) and also created a couple of scoring opportunities.

Play-maker Cabella and striker Niang looked very lively but unfortunately for Montpellier they were mostly providers for teammates, and not the ones trying to apply the finishing touch.

Guingamp will try to impose the rythm seeing they play at home but Montpellier can be deadly on counters, especially with the good form of Cabella and Niang. But with both sides sitting close to the relegation zone the primary concern will most likely be not to concede. From this point of view this game has a big potential of being the most annoying encounter of the round.

UPDATE: Guingamp are still without Mathis and Lemaitre. Montpellier will miss midfielder Marveaux who got another round of suspension.
