Although they won last round away at Ajaccio (2-1) Guingamp were far from convincing.
They successfully exploited opponents’ mistakes, but besides that Guingamp looked kind of pale. The squad doesn’t really have much depth so they use almost the same players round after round. The end of the season it’s not that far away and we’ve reached a point in which tiredness and lack of diversity have an impact on players’ performances.
They were never really very efficient upfront. In-fact only 1 in 4 shots actually hist the target. The problem is that nowadays they have 4 shots (off target) in 2 games put together.
Central midfielder Sankhare is the most in-form player, the one who creates most actions and the one providing assists. Besides him, Guingamp’s offensive phase is depressing. It will be even tougher against Lyon seeing that top-scorer Yatabare is suspended.
Surprisingly, opponents Lyon used most regulars in the midweek Europa League game away in Czech Republic. Only forward Lacazette watched from the bench while fullback Bedimo played about half an hour. Coach’s choice to use the first team was weird to say the least, seeing that Lyon had a comfortable advantage from the 1st leg (won 4-1).
In-spite playing with regulars they were defeated (lost 2-1) and were dominated for the entire game. It was a pretty shameful performance from Lyon.
Since play-maker Grenier got injured Lyon struggles to build coherent actions. The emphasis is now mostly on the flanks, where fullbacks Bedimo and Lopes started to play a major role. They advance frequently and try to surprise opponents with short passes inside the penalty box. But besides that, Lyon don’t really bother opponents.
Central defender Umtiti and midfielder Fofana will be missing once again through injury. Grenier may return, but he’s been out for quite a while and won’t be able to make any difference so soon.
Nobody should expect an abundance of scoring chances in this game as the primary characteristic of both sides (at least momentarily) is the lack of creativity.
UPDATE: Grenier is still not able to play, while fullback Bedimo also suffers an injury and will miss.
