Guingamp deserved at least a draw against Nantes last week, but not because they made a good game, but because both sides were just as bad and disappointing (Nantes won 1-0).
Guingamp were happy to withdraw in defense and let Nantes take the initiative. This strategy worked for them (for 85 minutes) but it would have been a different story against an opponent with a powerful attacking line (like Lyon).
Hosts’ strategy consists of midfielder Sankhare advancing alone until teammates open up tunnels. Needless to say this game-plan won’t bring Guingamp too many points this season.
Experienced forward Briand missed last game but may start this round against his former team (used to play for Lyon).
Central midfielder Mathis suffered an injury and most likely will miss this week.
Lyon dominated last round against Lorient but forwards failed to convert the numerous chances midfielders and fullbacks created for them. Offensive players Lacazette, Beauvue and Fekir were unrecognizable and somehow managed to miss opportunities they would have converted with eyes closed in the past.
But the good news is that fullback Rafael (ex Manchester United) adapted instantly and made an excellent game. Most of Lyon’s offensive actions were started by Rafael on the right side and ended with extremely precise passes. Bad news for fullback Jallet who is injured at the moment and may not have a place in the lineup when he returns.
Another good news is the transfer of attacking midfielder Valbuena from Dynamo Kiev. There is no need to talk about Valbeuna as you are surely familiar with his abilities.
Lyon will welcome back defensive midfielder Gonalons after he was suspended last round.
Let’s hope Lacazette, Fekir and Beavue (plays against his former club) will have a better day, but if not, Rafael’s incursions on the wing will end with dangerous balls inside the penalty box from where even the most out-of-form strikers can find the net. Lyon -0.50 at 2.23
