Guingamp – Evian Preview

It was surprising to see winger Beauvue starting only on the bench last round away at Rennes (Rennes won 1-0).

Maybe Beauvue was low on confidence or maybe he showed poor form at training sessions but in the end coach Gourvennec proved to be uninspired as Guingamp were not that incisive and could barely approach opponents’ penalty box.

In-fact for a few weeks already Guingamp seem changed, they lack inspiration in the attacking phase and in defense players aren’t paying enough attention.

It has been a rough season for Guingamp as they have been involved both in Europa League and in the French Cup until the later stages and coach Gourvennec couldn’t really afford the luxury to rotate. Maybe they don’t have any resources left and simply took the foot off the gas.

Evian are a bit unlucky as about a month ago it seemed they wouldn’t be having any relegation woes. But newly transferred-in striker Duhamel and winger Sunu suffered injuries and now Evian are once struggling in the attacking phase and sit just 1 point above the relegation zone. Keeper Hansen and fullback Sabaly also got injured a few rounds ago and the defensive potential is also diminished.

Midfielder Wass was once a key player but can’t be trusted anymore and does more harm rather than good. Last round for example he gave away a foolish penalty because of which Evian ended up with no points (lost 1-0 to Lille).

Young central midfielder Thomasson is maybe the only player performing above average as he is extremely active in every game. Thomasson initiates many dangerous actions, delivers key passes and also tries to take part in the finishing phase. But besides Thomasson all other players are at a mediocre level to say the best…

Both sides are in poor form and low on confidence confidence and if by any chance one of them will manage to find the net most likely they will defend the lead with 11 players until the final whistle.

UPDATE: Evian will welcome back fullback Sabaly
