Guingamp – Bastia Preview

Not exactly sure when it last happened but it’s definitely been a while since a team conceded 7 goals in Ligue1. Guingamp were simply humiliated last round on home ground by Nice (Nice won 7-2).

It was expected for Guingamp to start conceding more goals but nobody expected 7 in a single game. A couple of rounds ago Guingamp’s offense started to improve, they were creating more chances and confidence grew all of a sudden. Important central midfielder Sankhare also returned from injury and got carried away by teammates’ offensive appetite.

Guingamp’s defenders aren’t exactly world class material so they need constant support and when central midfielders are often caught off guard in opponents’ half the disaster can’t be avoided.

Adding to that is the tiredness that accumulated due to Europa League games and now we know all factors responsible for the shameful 7-2 loss.

Coach Gourvennec asked for forgiveness and promised to address the situation but in reality is not much he can do about it. The squad is still thin, players are still tired and furthermore now confidence hit rock bottom.

Bastia will arrive at Guingamp after a midweek Cup game in which they found themselves 1-0 down early in the game, but in-spite of that they won without much emotions (3-1 against Auxerre). Besides progressing to the next stage in the Cup the good news is that striker Cisse scored his first goal this season (in-fact he scored twice). A powerful, talented and in-form striker is exactly what Bastia needed.

Until now Bastia’s offensive phase constituted mostly in long range attempts. Hopefully with Cisse back and in-form things will change.

In-front of own fans Guingamp will try hard to make amends for last week. But given their lack of confidence this desire may easily backfire and could make them more offensively aggressive when instead they need to find a balance. Bastia +0.25 at 2.17
