Both teams won away from home in midweek Cup games. Only that Evian played against an in-form Ligue1 side, while Toulouse were up against a mediocre Ligue2 club (Creteil).
Even so, teams made the same efforts, since Toulouse needs to advance with every player in order to score. This happens because coach Casanova insists on using uninspired forward Braithwaite in the detriment of Ben Basat or any other player for that matter…
Lots of balls are lost and efforts are made in vain. Braithwaite’s teammates need to work twice as hard to compensate for his errors or lack of involvement. But we are all only humans and each of us have our own limits. Wingers Akpa Akpro and Sylla are very active and continuously running throughout the 90 minutes. The central midfielders are in the exact same situation.
Toulouse use a defense in 3, and when we add to that the constant movement of the midfield we realize why Rennes were able to trash them (5-0). Midfielders were either caught on the wrong foot or too tired to give a helping hand. So the 3 defenders, all of them concentrated in the center, were left to deal with incoming actions on their own.
Evian are still without topscorer Berigaud. But in his absence forward Sougou found his scoring appetite and proved to be a worthy alternative.
Winger Ehret is also very active since returning from injury and for sure he will make a difference against Toulouse who lacks proper fullbacks.
Having found a proper replacement for Berigaud, Evian will be able to speculate and exploit Toulouse’s inefficiency upfront. Against fast wingers and a prolific striker Toulouse’s defense in 3 will once again suffer, especially without the support of midfielders (gone upfront to compensate for Braithwaite’s mediocrity).
The price of 1.92 for Evian DNB is simply great.
