Evian – Nantes Preview

For a couple of rounds already Evian’s coach Dupraz changed the system, making the team more offensive. It is true they had a problem in the attacking phase, but the issue is not fully solved yet, and furthermore it may have created other deficiencies (in defense).

Now Evian starts with only 1 defensive minded central midfielder (most likely Sorlin who will be back from suspension), while the rest of the midfielders are more concentrated on attacking.

Sougou and Berigaud, who were actually central forwards, are now playing as wingers, and their potential has diminished considerably. In center they will most probably start with Tulio de Melo and Ruben, who are yet to adapt at Evian (De Melo arrived this winter after dusting on the bench at Lille for 2 seasons, while Ruben was mostly a reserve since the beginning of the season).

I don’t think coach Dupraz was that inspired when making Evian more offensive, as the players available aren’t exactly bringing anything new to the table…

The defense was never Evian’s strongest part, but now it seems more neglected than ever, as there is only one midfielder covering for defenders.

Central defender Mongongu suffered an injury last round, but it seems he will be able to play on Friday. Fullback Abdallah is still injured.

Nantes didn’t stood a chance last round against Rennes. They played at home and tried to be more aggressive but it backfired. Striker Djordjevic was suspended (will also miss this round) and coach Zakarian started with young N’Koudou on the wing. It was a lost bet and Zakarian quickly realized it in 2nd half when he took N’Koudou off.

Happily for Nantes striker Aristigueta will be back from injury and may go straight into the lineup. He is no great talent, but he is ambitious and fights to death for every ball. Also, with Aristigueta in the lineup, Gakpe can move back on the flank, where he feels more comfortable and achieves full potential.

This is a bad moment for Nantes, but their major strength remains the high level of organization. Nantes also love playing against opponents like Evian, who are offensive minded, apply moderate pressure, but fail to create real danger.

With Evian’ defense being loose and lacking support from midfielders, Nantes have a good chance of exploiting on counters.

The odds on Evian have no value whatsoever. Nantes +0.25 at evens is where the value lies.
