Evian – Marseille Preview

Surprisingly Evian conceded only once last round away at Toulouse (lost 1-0). They concentrated only on defending and all their chances came from long range attempts or set pieces.

Evian have the weakest defense in Ligue1 so far, not because they conceded 10 goals in 4 games, but because defenders are confused, slow and they don’t cover for one another. There is no possible way of keeping a clean sheet with cartoons-like interventions.

The defensive potential will be severely diminished as central defender Angoula and fullback Sabaly are out suspended. Most probably Angoula will be replaced by Mongongu who only clowns around instead of playing football.

Regardless the defensive problems Evian won’t really afford to sit back and defend since they only have 1 point from 4 games.

After a hesitant start of the season it seems that Marseille finally found a rythm and adapted to the new system imposed by coach Bielsa. Marseille easily outplayed Nice last round (won 4-0) after a convincing performance.

All offensive players appeared to be in top-form, even newly arrived Barrada who scored his first goal for Marseille after playing only a couple of minutes.

Even if opponents Nice failed to create constant pressure there were significantly less errors in Marseille’s defense in comparison to previous games. Evian’s offensive potential is also extremely reduced so there’s not much to worry in this regard.

Two rounds ago Evian mobilized exemplary against PSG and managed to get a valuable point. Things will be different now as their defense is shattered (2 suspensions) and they really need to more daring and at least try to get their first win. Marseille having found some form and confidence should be able to take advantage of this situation. Marseille -0.5 at 2.19
