Cup: PSG – Montpellier Preview

Just like against Bordeaux in the League Cup last week (PSG won 3-1) there may be some changes in PSG’s lineup.

Offensive players who are often only reserves like Pastore, Menez or Lucas may be in the lineup, while Cavani will most likely be only on the bench.

Not only the offensive compartment will suffer changes but the defense also.
For example against Bordeaux Camara started in central defense and Marquinhos (usually a reserve central defender) starter as a right fullback.

Marquinhos is young, precipitated and prone to making mistakes. Converting him to a fullback position severely diminishes the defensive potential of any team. Against Bordeaux, with Marquinhos as a fullback, PSG were lucky not to concede more, but against Montpellier, who often concentrate on that part of the field it may be a different story.

Right fullback Jallet is still injured for PSG and if coach Blanc wants to rest Van der Wiel he will have to use Marquinhos once again. Midfielder Rabiot is still injured, while winger Lavezzi was left to rest.

Montpellier look revived in 2014. They even manage to get their first win of the season away from home. What improved is the offense, as defensively they were also good in the 1st part of the season.

Play-maker Cabella is more confident and active now. Left winger Mounier is finally in a good form, the only problem is he is suspended for this game. But possible replacement Camara is also doing better in 2014. Even if mostly a substitute he can make a difference once on the field, as he did last round when provided the assist for the 2nd goal (Montpellier won 2-0 at Sochaux).

Tiene, ex PSG, was converted from fullback to winger and he feels more comfortable than ever. This is the peak of his career as he already scored 3 goals (most ever in a season) after only half a season.

No matter who coach Courbis will pick to be the left winger (Tiene or Camara), it should be too much for overconfident and immature Marquinhos (direct opponent). I consider this to be the key battle, and even if it won’t decide which team will qualify, it can decide if PSG will keep a clean sheet or not…

Montpellier to score at the odds of 2.00 with low to medium stakes.
