I believe last round was the first time this season when both Grenier and Gourcuff started and finished a game in the lineup.
Usually one of them was one the bench (most the times Gourcuff) and entered the field around min 60. At a first sight this strategy worked for Lyon as both Grenier and Gourcuff scored last round (won 2-0 against Sochaux), but after taking a deeper look I don’t think the partnership Grenier – Gourcuff will work.
First of all a defensive minded player had to be sacrificed, leaving defensive midfielder Gonalons overwhelmed. Last round Gonalons was often taken out of play because of numerical inferiority, and keep in mind the opponent was Sochaux, one of the weakest sides in Ligue1, both offensively and defensively.
Central defender Umtiti was in the same situation as Gonalons. There were opponents everywhere and he didn’t knew who to man-mark or on what side to tackle. It was a miracle Lyon haven’t conceded.
Despite having more creative power than usual, upfront Lyon were dangerous only through free-kicks and crosses. Grenier’s goal was from a free-kick, and Gourcuff’s came after a deflected cross.
Even if they keep more possession than opponents, Lyon don’t really create any chances, instead most of the passes are horizontal, between midfielders on the same line.
As a side note, it looked like Grenier and Gourcuff even argue about who to take the free-kicks…
Marseille conceded last round at Evian (won 2-1), but the defense was rock solid (the goal came after a corner). Fullbacks Morel and Fanni, the ones who were undisputed regulars at the beginning of the season, now are only bench warmers, and as a coincidence the defensive blunders stopped…
Only good news for Marseille as even Andre Ayew resumed training, although this game will come too early for him. But Valbuena played about 20 min. last round after a long injury that kept him sidelined.
A nice surprise is also the good form of winger Khelifa because of which talented Payet started only on the bench last round.
It will be a hard task for Lyon to score against Marseille’s lucid defense only from crosses or free-kicks. Meanwhile with the likes of Gignac, Thauvin or Khelifa in great form, Lyon won’t have the same luck as against Sochaux…
The price of 1.78 for Marseille +0.5 is simply huge. Medium to high confidence.
