Although they won 2-1 Caen were nothing special last round away at Nantes.
They scored both goals in the final 10 minutes after an easily awarded penalty and a weird free kick that ended up in the net. Besides the two goals Caen didn’t really created any other opportunities and from an offensive point of view the performance was really disappointing.
Wingers were not that inspired anymore and most their actions were easily stopped by opponents. Only a few balls reached lone striker Privat who also seemed to be out-of-form.
Defensively Caen confidently stood ground but opponents had reduced firepower so the performance is not really relevant.
Tiredness was obvious in the midweek game when Monaco struggled in vain for 90 minutes to open up Montpellier (finished 0-0). They held possession and pushed the game forward but resources were limited and especially in 2nd half it seemed like players had iron in their boots.
Unfortunately coach Jardim seem set on using the same players during the busy schedule and this stubbornness can put an end to their Champions League adventure (next week will play against Juventus). It is really a shame as there are many talented players on the bench or at the youth squad waiting for a chance.
If played in different conditions (Caen in-form and Monaco fresh) this game would have had good potential for going over. But considering present circumstances the game will be played mostly in midfield with Monaco struggling to find enough resources to reach the penalty box and Caen’s actions ending before they truly began.
