Bordeaux – Toulouse Preview

Bordeaux’s biggest problem in the first part of the season was the lack of offensive power. Striker Diabate was in and out of injuries and couldn’t achieve maximum potential (as a matter of fact he is injured now as well), and replacements Jussie or Rolan lacked the killer instinct.

Jussie is also injured for this game and Bordeaux will have rely on newly transferred striker Hoarau, who was mostly a bench warmer in China… I don’t think bringing in Hoarau will solve Bordeaux’s offensive problems.

The actions carried on the flanks by Maurice-Belay and Faubert will play a major role in Bordeaux’s tactics. That is how Bordeaux scored most their goals in the final rounds approaching the winter break. Wingers’ actions finished with crosses inside the box or short balls behind for Obraniak or Sertic who often had dangerous long range attempts.

Undoubtedly Bordeaux will continue with this strategy and will avoid building actions perpendicular with opponents’ goal.

Usually Bordeaux have a solid defense and only lack of concentration and tiredness can play tricks on them. But it shouldn’t be the case against Toulouse…

Toulouse will once again miss their most important player, midfielder Chantome. Toulouse already have offensive problems and without Chantome they build only on the flanks with Sylla and Akpa-Akpro, and whenever the ball reaches the attacking players in the center (Braithwaite, Ben Yedder or Trejo) everything goes to hell.

Toulouse will also miss defenders Yago and Abdennour. Abdennour is quite an important player, but Yago also, because his absences means Aurier will play central defender instead of winger. Toulouse could be much more dangerous with Aurier on the wing.

Ninkov and Moubandje are also out for Toulouse.

Both teams have deficiencies upfront but Bordeaux have more talented midfielders (especially wingers) able to open up defenses on their own or make a difference through long distance shots.

Toulouse use a defense in 3 and this system implies open spaces on the flanks, exactly where Bordeaux are more active.

I don’t think we will see many goals but the odds on under 2.5 goals are laughable. Even without a proper striker sooner or later Bordeaux will find the net through midfielders and will kill the game.

At 2.00 Bordeaux to win can be taken with low to medium confidence.
