Bordeaux’s coach Sagnol took everyone by surprise and started with five defenders in the midweek Cup game against the same opponent (Toulouse – Bordeaux 1-3).
Bordeaux concentrated mostly on preventing opponents from approaching the penalty box. It worked out for them, both because of the three central defenders but also thanks to Toulouse’s lack of inspiration.
Midfielder Sertic was used as a central defender and he fulfilled all his duties in an honorable manner. This round Sertic should once again play in the same position seeing that regular central defenders Ilori and Sane are out injured and third defender Pallois is suspended. Difficult situation for Bordeaux who will have to use a midfielder and a player from the 2nd team (Yambere) in central defense.
Winger Maurice – Belay should take his place in the lineup after being only on the bench in the Cup game.
Toulouse tried to impose the rythm and control the Cup game against Bordeaux but their defense in three got surprised early in the first half. Once again Toulouse were deficient at man-marking and the first goal arrived after 15 minutes following a corner. Ten minutes later a quick counter followed and Toulouse found themselves 2-0 down. They aren’t exactly bursting with creativity so it was almost impossible to bounce back.
Toulouse’s weakest part seem to be the aggressive attitude. They always use the same system, the same strategy regardless the opponent. They never adopt a defensive strategy and always try to apply constant pressure. Opponents are never properly man-marked and midfielders are often caught on the wrong foot.
Only a couple of days have passed since the Cup game between these teams and it will be interesting to see if Toulouse learned their lesson or will once again fall in the same trap. Besides playing at home Bordeaux will also be weakened defensively and won’t afford to focus again only on defending and striking on counters. If attitudes will change there is a high probability the outcome will also be different.
UPDATE: Bordeaux’s defensive midfielder Poko is also out suspended.
