Bordeaux – St Etienne Preview

bordeaux st etienne preview

BORDEAUX

Just by looking at the final result you may get the impression that Bordeaux were constantly dominated last week away at Lyon (lost 3-0). But that’s not the case, Bordeaux created plenty of chances and stopped most of opponents’ actions from incipient stages. Unfortunately when it came to applying the finishing touch Bordeaux failed completely.

It will be hard for Bordeaux to replace playmaker Khazri who transferred-out, but not impossible. Most probably Bordeaux will switch focus on the flanks, where they can make the difference thanks to experienced and skilled fullbacks Debuchy and Contento.

Last round we could already see a few signs of a new strategy for Bordeaux, a strategy based primarily on fullbacks.

Bordeaux will welcome back midfielder Poko after he was suspended last round.

ST ETIENNE

Convincing performance from St Etienne last round away at Rennes (won 1-0). They were very solid overall and fully deserved to take all points.

Since fullback Tabanou returned St Etienne are more stable on the flanks and look much more confident when defending.

St Etienne never used many players in the attacking phase, so it’s always difficult for opponents to find any open spaces or to create tunnels.

There are still plenty of rounds to go, but St Etienne are definitely a real contender for a Champions League place next season.

BETTING

The key battle will be carried down the flanks, where Bordeaux’s fullbacks will often advance trying to open up St Etienne. But this is a new strategy for Bordeaux, and fullback Debuchy just transferred-in and chemistry is at minimum levels. This is a good moment for St Etienne who are very confident and capable of neutralizing Bordeaux. St ETIENNE +0.25 at 2.00
