Bordeaux – Monaco Preview

Bordeaux made a good game away at Montpellier and deservingly won 1-0. Opponents weren’t that gifted offensively but that shouldn’t take away any of Bordeaux’s credit.

Their play on the wings was exemplary, especially on the left side where the actions carried out by fullback Poundje and winger Maurice-Belay simply dazzled opponents.

Newly transferred-in attacking midfielder Khazri quickly adapted and became the perfect link between wingers and forwards.

Fullback’s Poundje performance was surprising to say the least. Past seasons he was only mediocre and made many errors that buried Bordeaux. This is exactly why Bordeaux just transferred-in fullback Contento from Bayern. Nobody expected Poundje to perform this well and so the deal is sealed. There is a high possibility we will see Contento in the lineup against Monaco.

Fullback Mariano returns after injury but defender Plasil is highly doubtful.

Poor performance from Monaco last round at home against Lorient (lost 2-1). It was expected for Monaco to struggle a bit offensively after play-maker Rodriguez left the team, but you can’t be a title challenger only with long balls thrown inside the box…

Monaco also suffered defensively since all central midfielders tried to take part in the construction phase (in order to compensate Rodriguez’s absence) and the support for defenders was left aside.

Both central defenders Abdennour and Carvalho were too slow and often caught on the wrong foot. Carvalho even got a red card after a nasty foul and will miss against Bordeaux furthermore diminishing the defensive capabilities.

Fullback Raggi will return after being suspended last round.

Monaco will push hard to wash away the shame and maybe even bring more players to the attacking phase. Bordeaux’s striker Diabate, helped by offensive midfielders Rolan, Khazri and Maurice-Belay can destroy Monaco’s slow defense. Bordeaux DNB 2.08
