Bordeaux’s coach Sagnol made a vital mistake last round against Marseille as he adopted a very offensive formula. Poundje and Mariano were more wingers than forwards and the spaces left open on the flanks were huge.
This was simply suicidal against Marseille who have players like Payet or Thauvin active on the wings (Marseille won 3-1). Still, Bordeaux made a decent game and the goals that made the difference arrived only in the last 10 minutes.
Winger Maurice-Belay was Bordeaux’s best player. He initiated many actions, took valuable opponents out of play through fast dribbling moves and delivered many key passes (and an assist).
Bordeaux have a long list of a absences (Diabate, Faubert, Jussie, Pellenard, Ilori, Saivet, Poko and Khazri) but in comparison to last round only Khazri is fresh on the sidelines. Khazri didn’t seem to be in-form last week and played around with opportunities, so maybe replacement Rolan will be more pragmatic.
Lille may be a bit tired after a long midweek trip to Russia. In-spite winning only 1 point, Lille looked good against Krasnodar in Europa League (finished 1-1).
Opponents scored first and concentrated on defending the lead afterwards. Lille constantly pushed the game forward and in the same time remained solid in defense. The equalizer that came in the last 10 minutes was fully deserved, but all the efforts surely exhausted Lille.
In Ligue1 Lille aren’t doing that good lately and their last victory came two months ago against Bastia. They will have a hard time this round as well since both fullbacks Corchia and Beria are suspended. Possible replacement Souare is also suspended. It is going to be a nightmare against Bordeaux who concentrate mostly on building actions down the flanks. With Bordeaux’s winger Maurice-Belay in top form Lille’s 3rd choice fullbacks won’t know what hit them.
Bordeaux’s play has a nice flow and with creativity running high they should be able to take advantage of Lille’s condition (poor form, low confidence, tired and without regular fullbacks). Bordeaux -0.25 at 1.97
UPDATE: Bordeaux welcome back forward Saivet who is fully fit for action. Khazri and Ilori are also back in the squad but it seems they haven’t entirely recovered after injury.
