Bordeaux – Caen Preview

Bordeaux were a bit unlucky to leave empty handed from Reims last round (lost 1-0). They held most of the possession and had the best of chances but in the end they lacked pragmatism and efficiency.

Once again they will be favorites this round but circumstances will be different, meaning that Bordeaux’s task will be much more difficult.

First of all coach Sagnol will have to improvise something in defense. Central defender Sane is already injured and Ilori suffered a knock last round and is also out. In these conditions there is a high possibility that midfielder Sertic will play as central defender, like it happened last round after Ilori was substituted.

This is not exactly an ideal situation when you need to attack and corner the opponent. Defending against counters could prove to be a difficult task.

Secondly, Bordeaux will miss offensive minded Toure (suspended) who was one of their best players in the last couple of games. Although Bordeaux has decent options available, Toure’s absence will diminish the attacking potential.

Caen suffered a painful defeat last round against Marseille (lost 2-1 in the dying seconds). In-spite losing Caen made a good game, especially in defense where they kept it tight and whenever defenders got outplayed keeper Vercoutre made sure nothing got past him (well…besides the two goals…).

Caen showed confidence and determination, attributes that will surely be visible again this round against Bordeaux.

So far Caen are considered Ligue1’s away from home specialists. They feel much more comfortable when playing away, in-fact all of Caen’s points so far were won away from home (8 points won in away games, 0 points won in home games). The speed and talent of wingers Nangis and Bazile and the experience of striker Duhamel are the main reasons why counter-tactics fits Caen perfectly.

Bordeaux will try to take charge of the game but with an improvised defense they can easily fall victims to Caen’s lightning counters. Caen +0.5 at 1.99
