Bordeaux took everyone by surprise and are proudly topping Ligue1 after 3 rounds.
It’s been a long time since they had such a productive start of the season. With the exception of fullback Contento and play-maker Khazri Bordeaux look exactly the same as last season, so more or less we know what to expect from them.
By far the most impressive department was the offense, with striker Diabate being a key element for applying the finishing touch and also for delivering assists and creating spaces for teammates. Unfortunately for Bordeaux Diabate will miss this week through suspension after the tense game away at Nice (Bordeaux won 3-1).
With forward Saivet still out injured coach Sagnol will most likely convert winger Rolan to the striker position. This will considerably reduce the offensive potential and the timing couldn’t be worst since Bastia will focus on defending. Until now Bordeaux played against opponents that were happy to take initiative and invited Bordeaux to strike on counters. Now things will be different since Bordeaux will be the ones in charge and struggling to create spaces.
Defensive midfielder Poko will miss due to injury. This can create some problems especially since defenders aren’t always on alert and can be caught off guard.
Last round Bastia welcomed back defenders Diakite and Squilacci and suddenly confidence at the back skyrocketed. Besides the lone striker all players were involved in the defensive phase making it a nightmare for opponents to create dangerous opportunities.
Play-maker Boudebouz had poor performances in the first 2 rounds but is slowly picking up form and even scored last week against Toulouse (Bastia won 1-0) .
Forward Brandao is suspended, but to be honest his absence goes unnoticed as he failed to make an impact so far.
There is no doubt “Bordeaux to win” will be on many betting tickets around the world. But without Diabate and against a compact side hosts will find it almost impossible to approach the goal. Hosts don’t have a tight defense and this may help Bastia to strike on counters. Bastia +0.75 2.14
UPDATE: Besides the known absences hosts will also miss fullback Contento.
