Somehow Bastia managed to score 2 goals last round but the truth is they didn’t deserved it.
Away at Reims, Bastia were under heavy pressure ever since the game started. They lost 4-2 in the end and both their goals were the results of set pieces.
It is really a shame because Bastia have good potential but it seems there’s no motivation and players have no confidence.
Fullbacks Cioni and Palmieri stumble over own legs, central defenders Squillaci and Modesto are too slow and lack intuition and defensive midfielder Sable tackles in slow motion .
Don’t think the upper half of the team is in a better condition. Coach Hantz has trouble deciding who to use as a playmaker. One game Boudebouz starts in the central midfield and the other game Ilan is used on that position. A couple of rounds ago their most in-form player was Krasic, but now he is left on the bench because of those constant changes.
Bastia need a motivator and, unfortunately for them, coach Hantz is not one.
They will still be without suspended forward Bruno and injured defender Harek and midfielder Cahuzac.
Ever since winger Alessandrini came back from injury Rennes are much more dangerous. Even defensive players have found some peace of mind knowing that teammates are able to keep possession, create chances and prevent opponents from exercising constant pressure.
Looks like coach Montanier found the perfect formula. He finally decided to play with Kadir instead of club icon Feret. This was a good choice that boosted Rennes’ offensive potential.
With Kana-Biyik in central defense Rennes are not exactly rock solid at the back. But there’s constant help provided by the 2 central midfielders Makoun and Bakayoko. Central midfielder Doucoure may also return from injury for this game.
The key battle will certainly take place on the wings where Alessandrini and Pitroipa will overwhelm Bastia’s fullbacks.
Bookies see Bastia as favorites but it should be the other way around. I am still waiting for an offer to give bookmakers consultancy on Ligue1 odds… Rennes +0.25 at 1.81 is definitely worth some low to medium stakes.
